For some, it is the first time they have heard of it, while others have been drinking it for years… That’s right! We are talking about vegan wine🍷, an alternative that is gaining more and more prominence in the wine world.
In Catalonia, we can find a long list of wineries that produce vegan wine. But before getting to know them, let’s discover the characteristics of this type of wine because, what exactly is vegan wine?
Vegan wine is wine that does not use animal-derived products in its production. In other words, no animal products are used either as ingredients or during the production process.
Wine comes from grapes🍇, it is stored in wooden barrels inside a winery, and the bottles in which it is kept are made of glass. Up to this point, the entire process is vegan. However, it is during the wine clarification process that each producer uses the techniques they consider appropriate.
Clarification is the process carried out to clean the wine and remove impurities, yeasts, remaining proteins and other substances that could affect the wine before it is bottled.
In the clarification of traditional wine, substances of animal origin may be used, such as casein (a protein derived from milk), gelatine (derived from animal cartilage), egg white, animal albumin (a protein derived from blood), etc.
In the case of vegan wine, clarification is carried out using plant- or mineral-based elements, for example, proteins derived from potatoes, wheat or peas, or carrageenan (a polysaccharide extracted from algae).🌾
Identifying vegan wines is not always easy, as indicating that a wine is vegan is not mandatory. However, most wineries that produce vegan wine do have the corresponding certification seal.🔖
Therefore, to find out whether a wine is vegan, you simply need to check the labelling on the bottle🍾 or box.
