The small village of Siurana<\/strong> is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Catalonia<\/strong> and is undoubtedly a must-see destination for anyone visiting the area.<\/p>\n

For us, without a doubt, it is the most beautiful of all, because the beauty of its small old town is combined with the impressive and spectacular views, which have no comparison with those of any other village.<\/p>\n

Location of Siurana<\/h2>\n

The village of Siurana is located in the province of Tarragona, specifically in the Priorat region, one hour from the provincial capital and two hours from Barcelona.<\/p>\n

To reach Siurana, the best option is to drive to the nearby village of Cornudella de Montsant<\/strong> and from there take the winding road that leads up to the village, more than 700 metres above sea level, between the Prades and Montsant mountain ranges.<\/p>\n

The spectacular location of the village, perched on limestone rocks at the top of a huge cliff, offers impressive views of the surrounding area and nearby valleys.<\/p>\n

At the entrance to the village, there is a car park where you can leave your vehicle. From there, you can start walking along the cliffs, where the sheer vertical rocks provide excellent viewpoints over the entire area.<\/p>\n

Siurana Castle<\/h2>\n

On part of the rocky ridge, very close to the car park and before entering the village, you will find the remains of Siurana Castle<\/strong>, the last Moorish stronghold in Catalonia.<\/p>\n

The fortress only preserves some sections of the walls and parts of the tower. Consolidation work has been carried out, and although the site cannot be visited, you can still get an idea of how difficult it was for the Christian forces to reach and conquer the inhabitants of this seemingly impregnable fortress.<\/p>\n

The exceptional location of Siurana made it an almost impregnable stronghold, and it could only be conquered after a long siege.<\/p>\n

It was in the 12th century, specifically in 1153, when the troops of Ramon Berenguer IV<\/strong>, first king of the Crown of Aragon and Count of Barcelona, reached the foot of the walls. After a siege lasting several months, the last Muslim kingdom fell into Christian hands, and Beltran de Castellet became the first Christian governor of Siurana and the extensive territories administered from there.<\/p>\n

The Legend of the Moorish Queen<\/h2>\n

One of the must-see places in Siurana is undoubtedly the viewpoint known as the Salt de la Reina Mora<\/strong> (Moorish Queen’s Leap).<\/p>\n

According to legend, the last Moorish queen of the village, Abdelazia<\/strong>, seeing the imminent conquest of the town by the Christian troops and unwilling to be captured, mounted her horse and jumped off the cliff to avoid falling into their hands.<\/p>\n

The horse resisted and tried to prevent the leap. During its futile struggle, it left the imprint of its horseshoe on the rock, which can still be seen today. According to legend, this was how the last stronghold of Al-Andalus passed into Christian hands.<\/p>\n

If you approach the Salt de la Reina<\/strong> viewpoint, you can enjoy incredible views of the cliff and, in the distance, the Siurana reservoir.<\/p>\n

The Village of Siurana<\/h2>\n

After leaving the castle, we enter the small and compact village. The streets are perfectly paved with stone, as are the houses, giving the whole area a charming character.<\/p>\n

Carrer Major runs through the village and leads directly to the Romanesque church of Santa Maria<\/strong>, built after the Reconquest. Its decorated entrance doorway with semicircular arches is one of its most notable features.<\/p>\n

Continuing along the village, we reach huge flat rocks that lead to a spectacular drop above the waters of the reservoir, with views over the village of Cornudella de Montsant.<\/p>\n

During the walk, it is impossible not to stop constantly to capture every corner of the village and its spectacular views.<\/p>\n

What to do in Siurana?<\/h2>\n

Siurana offers a wide range of leisure activities, from peaceful hikes to more adventurous experiences. The area is a paradise for hiking and rock climbing.<\/p>\n

Siurana and its surroundings have numerous climbing routes of varying difficulty. As for hiking trails, we recommend walking part of the well-known Cam\u00ed antic de Siurana<\/strong>, which descends from the village towards the river, or the section known as the Grau de la Trona<\/strong>, which offers spectacular views along a narrow trail running along the cliffs.<\/p>\n

At the Siurana reservoir, you can also enjoy kayaking and canoeing on its calm waters. By paddling, you can reach the mouth of the Siurana River at the reservoir, and if you continue upstream, you can reach the spectacular Toll de la Palla<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
